Malliotakis, Golden Oppose Status Quo, Vote Against Incumbent Board of Regents Members

Call for new members to be elected to the board

Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R,C,I-Brooklyn, Staten Island) and State Sen. Martin J. Golden (R,C,I-Brooklyn) today voted against the reelection of the incumbent members of the Board of Regents. Members of the board are elected in a joint session of the legislature. All incumbents were part of the initial implementation of the Common Core Standards.

“All four incumbent members of the Board of Regents were part of the disastrous roll out of Common Core, and have not shown any inclination to make the necessary changes to our educational system. What New Yorkers need is real reform of our education system and new people to serve as fresh voices on the Board of Regents. People who will help provide a more age-appropriate curriculum, better meet the needs of our special education students, provide teachers with greater autonomy, and help reduce the impact of standardized testing, which is causing severe stress and strain on our children,” said Malliotakis.

Senator Marty Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) stated, “Today, I voted against the re-election of four members of the New York State Board of Regents who have failed our educational system in the implementation of the Common Core curriculum here in our state. Parents, teachers and the students learning in our classrooms are frustrated by the Common Core, and we had to send a message that while we all agree on raising educational standards, it must be handled in a proper manner. New leadership on the Board of Regents would have allowed a new perspective on the Common Core curriculum, and will be asked to take into consideration the concerns of the educational community moving forward.”
