Brooklyn – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn), a former New York City Police Officer, has issued the following statement following the announcement of six arrests and indictments made on drug related charges in the Bay Ridge area:
“Working with the community and law enforcement officials, today, we send a message throughout the Bay Ridge area that we will not tolerate the presence of drugs on our street. At a recent town hall meeting that I hosted on this topic, I saw the frustration, and fear, that drugs have caused our neighborhood families. Residents forced to contend with drug sales in stores where they are simply looking to purchase milk.
I commend the work of the New York City Police Department, and hope that the Brooklyn District Attorney charges these individuals to the fullest extent of the law, so that they are not back out on our streets in no time, destroying our quality of life. The war on drugs is not over and we must remain vigilant in reporting drug activity, and I encourage residents to continue to work with me to eradicate this problem."
On February 27th, Senator Golden hosted a town hall meeting on drug use and abuse in our community with officials from the New York City Police Department, the Brooklyn DA's office, community organizations and the Dynamite Coalition drug prevention program. Late last week, Golden voted to include in the Senate one house budget bill, $450,000 in funding to help with opiod drug addiction, prevention and treatment programs. The Senate budget bill also includes a provision seeking to amend the law so that in instances where an individual is in possession of 50 or more controlled substance packages, they can be charged with the intent to sell.
Senator Marty Golden was today appointed to the New York State Senate Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Addiction. Anyone wishing to report drug activity or locations anonymously is encouraged to do so by contact Golden's office at (718) 238-6044.
