Senator Mike Nozzolio Asks Local Residents to Participate in Their Local Memorial Day Ceremonies and Urges Them to Participation in the Memorial Day Ceremony at the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Romulus

In a effort to honor our Nation’s greatest heroes as well as to recognize our region’s historic significance as the birthplace of Memorial Day, State Senator Mike Nozzolio is urging residents of the Finger Lakes area to attend their individual village and town Memorial Day ceremonies on Monday, May 26^th, and to also attend a special Memorial Day Ceremony that is being held at the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Romulus, New York at 2:00 PM.

“As residents across the Finger Lakes region finish participating in their community Memorial day events on Monday, May 26^th, I encourage everyone to join me at the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery for a regional ceremony honoring the memories of our Nation’s fallen veterans,” said Senator Nozzolio. “The ceremony begins at 2:00 o'clock PM and will culminate with a military salute with honors and TAPS to recognize those individuals who gave their lives throughout history to protect our Nation, including the nearly 200 veterans who have been buried at Sampson”

“We have no greater obligation than to honor and thank our veterans for their service to our Nation, whether in times of peace or in times of war,” continued Senator Nozzolio. “Just as our veterans recognized their duty to honor and serve their Country, we too must recognize our duty as Americans to honor the profound sacrifices they made so that we could live our lives in freedom.” 

The Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery was officially dedicated in July of 2011, after more than a decade of hard work and planning. The cemetery is located at the site of the former Sampson Naval and Air Force base where over a million sailors and airmen were trained in preparation for battle.  The Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery sits on hallowed ground and serves as a world-class monument to our Nation’s veterans for their courage, commitment and service.

Senator Nozzolio will be participating in a number of other Memorial Day events throughout his Senate District between Thursday, May 22nd and Monday, May 26^th, including the solemn ceremony at the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery. 

Thursday, May 22nd

Phelps- Senator Nozzolio will participate in the annual Memorial Day event at the Midlakes Primary School, where he will join with students as they celebrate this important day with a ceremony to recognize our country's veterans as well as our soldiers still serving overseas.  


Friday, May 23rd

Waterloo- Senator Nozzolio will speak at a special reception at the Waterloo Library and Historical Society to honor a longtime Waterloo resident, Doris Wolf, for her unwavering commitment to the Waterloo community.  Doris is being recognized with the Henry C. Welles award for her numerous volunteer activities to the Waterloo community. The Henry C. Welles award is named in honor of Henry C. Welles, a Waterloo resident who conceived and helped to organize the first ever observance of Memorial Day in Waterloo in May of 1866. Senator Nozzolio will also present Doris with a special New York State Resolution that was formally adopted by the New York State Senate to honor her dedication, drive and determination on behalf of her community. The event begins at 5:00 PM and tickets are available at the Waterloo Library.

Saturday, May 24^th 

Waterloo- Senator Nozzolio will be a part of the Village of Waterloo's celebration as the nationally recognized birthplace of Memorial Day by participating in the annual Celebrate/Commemorate Memorial Day parade.  The parade kicks off at 11:00 AM and is a part of the annual Celebrate/Commemorate weekend of special events. Monday, May 26th

Interlaken- Senator Nozzolio will deliver the Memorial Day address at the Interlaken Grange Memorial Day Honors Ceremony. The ceremony will begin at 9:00 AM at the Lake View Cemetery in Interlaken. 

Geneva- Senator Nozzolio will honor our veterans at the annual Memorial Day ceremony coordinated by the Veterans of Foreign Wars - Geneva Memorial Post 2670.  The parade will start at 10:00 AM at the intersection of Franklin Square and Exchange Street and end in Pultney Park. Senator Nozzolio will be the keynote speaker at the ceremony beginning at 11:00 AM.

Town of Seneca- At 12:00 o'clock PM Senator Nozzolio will participate in the town of Seneca Memorial Day Celebration. Senator Nozzolio will help unveil and dedicate the new Veterans Memorial Park at a special ceremony, which will include the decommissioning of the existing flagpole and the commissioning of the new "Veterans Park"  flagpole. The new veterans park is located next to the Seneca town hall at 3675 Flint Road in Stanley. 

Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery- Senator Nozzolio will also participate in a Veterans’ Memorial march at the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Romulus, culminating with a military salute with honors and TAPS to pay tribute to the brave men and women who have sacrificed so much for our Nation. Friday, May 30th

Williamson – Senator Nozzolio will be the guest speaker for the Memorial Day Parade and Ceremony organized by the Williamson American Legion. The parade will start at 6:30 PM at American Legion Post 394 in Williamson and will proceed to the cemetery, where the ceremony will begin at approximately 6:45 PM.

“Memorial Day is a powerful reminder that the freedom we enjoy as Americans is not free, but paid for with the courage, valor and sadly, the lives of thousands of our fellow Americans. I strongly urge everyone to try to attend the Memorial Day services at the Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery,” said Senator Nozzolio. “I look forward to joining veterans throughout our region as we commemorate the sacrifices of our Nation’s greatest heroes at this solemn event.”
