New York State Senator Mike Nozzolio today announced that the “Jobs for Heroes” legislation has been enacted by both houses of the State Legislature and will soon be signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo. This important new law, which Senator Nozzolio co-sponsored and fought to enact, will create new jobs and business opportunities for our veterans who have a service related disability.

“There is no greater debt of honor owed to anyone than that which every American citizen owes to our veterans, especially those who have been wounded and disabled in battle while serving our Nation. I was honored to work with Marine Corps veteran, Dan MacDonald of Webster, and a number of local veterans groups to enact this measure into law,” said Senator Mike Nozzolio.

“Senator Nozzolio has been a very vocal and strong advocate for our veterans and I was pleased to work with him to enact this important legislation. This new law will help service-disabled business owners, like myself, to create new jobs and allow us to become self sufficient, productive members of our local communities. I look forward to continuing to work with Senator Nozzolio to give our veterans the tools and resources they need to provide for their families,” said local business owner Dan MacDonald, a veteran of the Gulf War and a member of the Cottreall-Warner American Legion Post in Webster.

“Jobs for Heroes” gives State contract preferences to a business that is owned by a military service-disabled veteran. The program will be managed by the New York State Division of Veterans Affairs and will set aside 6% of all New York State contracts for businesses owned by a military service-disabled veteran. This important legislation mirrors a highly successful program at the federal level and similar legislation that has been enacted in nearly forty other states.

“This important new law is the next step in our continuing efforts to recognize the valor and bravery of our veterans as they return and seek jobs in their local communities. This new law ensures that our service-disabled veterans have the opportunity to start or expand a business right here in the Finger Lakes region or anywhere in New York State. As State Senator, I will continue to do everything I can to honor the sacrifices and commitment of our veterans and their families,” concluded Senator Mike Nozzolio.
