Will help to reduce the burden on local taxpayers
New York State Senator Michael F. Nozzolio, today joined with local highway superintendents from across his Senate District to call for increased funding for the Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS). This important program is designed to help local governments meet their infrastructure needs, without raising taxes on New York’s hardworking taxpayers.
“A well-funded, well-maintained transportation infrastructure is critical for economic growth and job creation in New York State and I am honored to join with highway superintendents from across my Senate District to share my support for increasing funding for CHIPS,” said Senator Mike Nozzolio. “Local governments are responsible for the maintenance of thousands of bridges and nearly 100,000 miles of local roads and highways in our State. If stretched end to end, the miles of local roads in New York State would circumnavigate the globe nearly four times. This much needed funding is vital in our efforts to repair our local roads and keep them well maintained and safe.”
The Consolidated Local Street and Highway Improvement Program (CHIPS) provides State funds to municipalities to support the construction and repair of highways, bridges, highway-railroad crossings, and other facilities that are not on the State highway system. Senator Nozzolio led the fight to secure $75 million dollars in additional funding for local roads and infrastructure in the 2013-2014 New York State Budget.
"It is essential that we continue to make the necessary investments in New York’s transportation network. As State Senator, I will continue my efforts on behalf of our local citizens, farmers and business owners to reduce the burden on local taxpayers and secure State funding for infrastructure improvements in our region,” concluded Senator Mike Nozzolio.
