SENATOR TERRY GIPSON’S STATEMENT ON EDUCATION REPORT
POUGHKEEPSIE, NY – New York State Senator Terry Gipson (D-Dutchess, Putnam) issued the following statement after the recent report from the Alliance for Quality Education and Opportunity Action on the inequities in state education funding:
“New York State can no longer push this issue aside. Our antiquated system of funding public education has not been working for a long time. It’s not working for our children or for the taxpayers.
“For too long, the state has drifted from its constitutional responsibility of providing a quality education for our children. This responsibility has been placed on the backs of hardworking homeowners and businesses. Further, as this report shows, it has led to unacceptable inequities in the quality of education our children are receiving.
“In my first term, I, like other lawmakers, have presented different proposals on how New York can reform its education system. It is time to come together and work to find solutions and a plan that works for all New Yorkers. I’m committed to fighting for an education system that ensures a quality education for every child while bringing meaningful tax relief to property owners. It won’t be easy, but the risk to our state’s future is too great.”
