Flushing, NY—Senator Toby Ann Stavisky (D-Flushing) urges fellow New Yorkers to celebrate Martin Luther King Day by getting involved in a community service project.
“Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a remarkable leader who dedicated his life to peace and public service,” said Senator Stavisky. “There is no better way to honor his memory than to use this day to improve our communities."
Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King’s birthday was established as a federal holiday in 1983. In 1994, Congress further designated the Martin Luther King Jr. Federal Holiday as a national day of service.
The MLK Day of Service is a part of United We Serve, the President's national call to service initiative. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems.
Senator Stavisky concluded, “Dr King once said, ‘Life's most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?’ It’s important that we all remember this very powerful message and strive to make positive change in our society no matter how big or small, every day of the year.”
