BAYSIDE, NY – Today, Senator Avella announced that the New York Conference of Italian-American State Legislators is now accepting applications for four $2,000 scholarships to be awarded on June 9th at their Annual Legislative Conference Day.
The scholarships will be handed out to four current or future college students from New York State. Eligibility will be based upon the student’s grade point average, interest in pursuing a higher education, involvement in the local community as well as individual financial need.
“Given the ever increasing costs of higher education, every opportunity must be explored by local students and their families to meet the required expenses by applying for scholarships, financial aid and scholarships,” said Senator Avella. “The State Legislature and specifically, the Italian-American Conference, is very proud of our role in promoting higher education and assisting students in reaching their academic goals and full potential for future success in the global marketplace. I highly recommend that the students of my Senatorial District apply for these prestigious scholarships.”
Two of the scholarships will be awarded based on academic achievement and two for athletic talent. Each member of the Conference will nominate two students, one from each category, for the scholarships and the final winners will be selected by an independent panel.
To apply, any interested students should contact Senator Avella’s District Office to request an application by calling (718) 357-3094 or emailing avella@nysenate.gov.
Completed applications must be received by the District Office no later than Friday, May 2nd, 2014.
