Senator Avella Responds to Violent Home Invasion in Bay Terrace

Men posing as maintenance workers tied up and brutally assaulted two senior citizens
(Bayside, QUEENS) Today, Senator Tony Avella responded to a report of a violent home invasion which left an elderly couple robbed and severely beaten in a quiet, residential garden apartment complex in Bay Terrace.
The 109th Police Precinct confirmed that two men posing as maintenance workers entered the garden apartment on April 22nd, 2014 around 2:30 PM in Bay Terrace. The men proceeded to tie up the elderly couple and brutally assault them before fleeing the property. The victims were immediately transferred to the nearby hospital, where they are currently listed in stable condition.
Senator Avella stated, “I was deeply saddened and disturbed to learn the news of this horrific home invasion. My thoughts are with the victims, who thankfully, are expected to recover. Although Bay Terrace are feeling extremely rattled at the moment, I have every confidence that the 109th Precinct will catch those responsible and bring them to justice. However, I strongly urge all residents, especially senior citizens, to remain vigilant and call the authorities if anyone they do not expect tries entering their home.”

Senator Avella continued, “Whether individuals pose as maintenance, Con Edison or City agency workers, we can never be too careful when a stranger rings our doorbell. Call the authorities, your landlord, or your management company to confirm their identity prior to opening the door. Personal vigilance is key to helping stop these incidents from occurring in the future.”
Individuals may also call the Crime Prevention Unit to request a home inspection security survey. The survey, which is performed by an NYPD officer, is a confidential, in-depth written report that evaluates the existing security and procedures of a premise. It will address security vulnerabilities and outline corrective measures, free of charge.
