Yonkers, NY - On Monday, April 20th, Senate Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, at the invitation of Governor Andrew Cuomo, will be a member of the New York State delegation traveling to Cuba to consider trade options. The trip was made possible in the wake of President Obama’s initiative to chart a new course of diplomatic relations with the island nation located 90 miles from U.S. shores.
Senator Stewart-Cousins sees the potential for this trip on many levels. ”I look forward to using this as an opportunity to not only help promote the New York economy but also to advocate for the Senate Democratic Agenda including raising the minimum wage, enacting stronger ethics reforms, and passing equal pay for equal work and paid family leave. On a local level, I will use it to push for more help for Yonkers schools who are facing massive layoffs.”
This is the first state delegation trip Senator Stewart-Cousins will be making in her historic leadership role as the first female legislative conference leader in New York State.
The delegation will attend trade meetings and a dinner during the overnight trip and will return to New York Tuesday afternoon, April 21st.
