Keeping Our College Campuses Safe
Andrew J Lanza

Our colleges and universities are supposed to provide safe, secure environments that foster personal growth and academic excellence. But cases of rape, sexual assault, dating violence and other crimes continue to occur each year on college campuses throughout the nation.
My colleagues and I in the State Senate are taking a leadership role in the effort to combat these outrageous crimes, and to protect every student from harm.
After working closely with victim’s rights advocates, law enforcement professionals, legal experts and higher education professionals, we have developed a comprehensive approach designed to make every college and university campus throughout New York State as safe and secure as possible.
Now, I am pleased to announce that we have reached agreement on a new law that will:
· Expand protections to students at all public and private colleges and universities;
· Enhance the rights of crime victims;
· Help prevent future cases of sexual assault, dating violence and domestic violence; and
· Ensure due process for students.

With the enactment of this new law, our state will be taking a major step toward making New York’s college campuses the safest and most secure in the entire nation.
I will remained committed to supporting initiatives that further strengthen the safety of our college campuses and will be sure to keep you posted on my efforts.
Sincerely,
Andrew Lanza
Senator
