State Senator Andrew Lanza (R,C,I-Staten Island) and Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R,C,I-Brooklyn, Staten Island) are commending the New York City Department of Transportation (DOT) after the agency ceased issuing violations at a problematic bus lane camera at the intersection of Hylan Boulevard and Garretson Avenue.
The camera had been issuing violations for driving through the intersection in the southbound lane of Hylan Boulevard without making a right-hand turn onto Garretson Avenue, despite the fact that Garretson Avenue is a one-way street headed toward Hylan Boulevard.
Malliotakis and Lanza formally requested that the camera be removed in a letter to DOT Commissioner Polly Trottenberg last May, followed by a press conference at the intersection. The lawmakers argued that the camera only served to confuse motorists, generate revenue, and yield a less safe environment for both drivers and pedestrians.
“While the bus lane camera program has been far from popular in Staten Island, we have to commend DOT for coming to the table and rectifying some of its problems. From the unfair violations being issued at the Hunter Avenue intersection to this downright dangerous situation at Garretson, Commissioner Trottenberg has exhibited a willingness to make necessary corrections. We might not agree that red light cameras, bus lane cameras, and speed cameras implemented by the city are the best thing for Staten Island, but we can work together to make it run better and eliminate some negative effects. We look forward to continuing our efforts with Commissioner Trottenberg, Borough Commissioner Tom Cocola, and the hardworking DOT staff,” said Lanza and Malliotakis in a joint statement.
