Hoylman Bill to Promote Use of Energy Efficient Appliances Passes Senate

Legislation requires organizations receiving state funds from NYS Dormitory Authority and/or the Urban Development Corporation to purchase “Energy Star” certified appliances when available

ALBANY - Today, the New York State Senate passed legislation introduced by State Senator Brad Hoylman (D-Manhattan) to direct state capital improvement funds toward the purchase of energy star appliances and equipment when such products are available. Energy star products are identified to be more energy efficient than their standard model counterparts and as a result reduce greenhouse gas emissions while also leading to lower utility bills for consumers.

State Senator Brad Hoylman said: “Energy used in buildings accounts for over 40 percent of greenhouse gas emissions contributing to climate change and I’m very pleased the Senate has passed my bill to promote the use of energy star certified products, which also lead to lower utility bills for New York families and businesses. The threat of climate change is very real and the use of more energy efficient technologies is one of many ways New York can act to combat this crisis while lowering the cost of energy for consumers.”

Energy Star is a product identification program designed to promote the use of energy efficient products. Energy Star labeled products include appliances like TVs and refrigerators, light bulbs, heating cooling and plumbing products and office equipment. In addition to reducing pollution, energy star products also lead to significant consumer savings for New York families and businesses by using 10 to 50 percent less energy and water than standard models.  

S.3034, which passed the State Senate today, requires organizations receiving state funds from the New York State Dormitory Authority and/or the Urban Development Corporation to use those funds to purchase “Energy Star” certified products and appliances when such products are available. The bill passed the Senate with bipartisan support on a 55-1 vote.

The bill now heads to a vote in the Assembly, where it is sponsored by Assembly Member Andrew Hevesi.
