Decision Ends Years-Long Fight Against Illegal Penthouse Addition to Historical Landmark

New York, NY - State Senator Brad Hoylman (D-Manhattan) said: “I'm elated by today's Appellate Division decision, which means that the owner of the Hopper-Gibbons House at 339 West 29th Street will have to remove the unsightly and illegal penthouse addition to the building, the last surviving stop of the Underground Railroad in Manhattan. The ruling also affirms the authority of the NYC Landmarks Preservation Commission and helps preserve an integral piece of American civil rights history. I congratulate and thank Fern Luskin, Julie Finch, the Friends of Hopper-Gibbons Underground Railroad, Manhattan Community Board 4 and the City of New York for their steadfast perseverance in this years-long fight.”
