NEW YORK - Yesterday, in commemoration of Veteran's Day, State Senator Brad Hoylman (D-Manhattan) attended the 10th Precinct Community Council Wreath Laying Ceremony at Chelsea Park Memorial for the second year in a row. The Senator gave brief remarks and then, along with Deputy Inspector Michele Irizarry, laid a wreath before the World War I Doughboy Monument. Below are Senator Hoylman's remarks:
"It is a privilege to participate in the 10th Precinct Community Council's annual Wreath Laying Ceremony at the Chelsea Park Memorial. It is our responsibility as citizens to care for all our brave veterans who have borne the heavy burden of protecting those freedoms that we hold so dear.
“But while we take time to honor our servicemen and women, we must remember the countless veterans who have been discharged less than honorably solely because of who they are. Lawmakers in Albany can and should correct this historic injustice by passing the Restoration of Honor Act. This bill, which I introduced with Senator Addabbo, will allow veterans discharged because of their sexual orientation or gender identity to access a host of important programs, services and benefits at the state level. This Veteran’s Day, as we take time to honor the sacrifice of our service members, we should call on our elected leaders to ensure the honor of all our veterans.”
