Hoylman: “The well-being of LGBT kids throughout New York continues to be threatened until the State Senate takes action”
NEW YORK – State Senator Brad Hoylman (D-Manhattan) said: “I commend Assembly Member Deborah Glick and members of the New York State Assembly for passing legislation to once and for all prohibit state licensed therapists from practicing ‘conversion therapy’ on minors. This practice has been completely discredited by all leading medical and mental health organizations because being gay is not an illness and allowing mental health professionals to treat it as such amounts to nothing more than child abuse and consumer fraud. The well-being of LGBT kids throughout New York continues to be threatened until the State Senate takes action. I urge my Republican colleagues to at the very least hold a vote on this critical legislation.”
Senator Hoylman introduced S.0121 with cosponsor State Senator Michael Gianaris to prohibit state licensed professionals from practicing conversion therapy on minors. Assembly Member Deborah Glick introduced A.4958, which passed the New York State Assembly overwhelmingly today by a vote of 94-23.
