Statement by Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal and Senator Brad Hoylman on Governor Cuomo’s Veto of the Port Ambrose Liquefied Natural Gas Facility
November 12, 2015
NEW YORK – Assemblymember Linda B. Rosenthal (D/WF-Manhattan) and State Senator Brad Hoylman (D/WF-Manhattan) released the following statement in response to Governor Cuomo’s announcement today that he will veto the Port Ambrose Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) Facility:
Assemblymember Rosenthal and Senator Hoylman said: “After partnering with advocates for more than a year to raise awareness about the potentially disastrous consequences of the proposed Port Ambrose LNG Facility, we are thrilled that the Governor today announced that he just vetoed the project. In a letter sent to the Governor in March and joint testimonies submitted to the U.S. Maritime Administration and New York City Council, we stressed that construction of this facility just 19 miles off the coast of New York would exacerbate ecological degradation of the surrounding area and increase our state's reliance on dirty methane-emitting fuels. We are grateful to Governor Cuomo for his courageous decision to veto Port Ambrose. Earlier this year the Governor pledged to reduce New York’s greenhouse gas emissions 80% by 2050 and his decision today will help ensure we are able to achieve that ambitious goal.”
