Statement by Senator Brad Hoylman Regarding Senate Republican Leadership Questioning of Governor Cuomo's Executive Action on Transgender Rights
October 30, 2015
“Any effort to question the Governor's authority to establish statewide regulations to protect transgender New Yorkers from discrimination is misguided. Governor Cuomo was well within his executive powers to do so and I'm disappointed that the Republican leader of the Senate would question it, especially since the Republicans have repeatedly blocked the Gender Expression Nondiscrimination Act, carried by Senator Squadron and Assembly Member Gottfried. Because the Senate refused to act, the Governor took matters into his own hands and as a result, thousands of transgender people across the state will be protected from discrimination in housing, public places and at work.”
