Bills will designate portions of State Route 15A in Livingston County in honor of local veterans
ALBANY – As a salute to veterans past and present from Livingston County, Senator Catharine Young (R,C,I – 57th District) announced today that legislation she authored has been signed into law by Governor Cuomo. The two bills designate portions of State Route 15A as the Springwater Veterans Memorial Highway and the Livonia Veterans Memorial Highway.
This stretch of state highway runs nine miles, and will serve as an acknowledgment to the efforts of local service members. Visitors traveling through the Towns of Springwater and Livonia will now be reminded of the sacrifices made by area veterans on their behalf.
“Every one of our veterans is a national treasure,” said Senator Young. “They epitomize everything it means to be an American – service, dedication, sacrifice for the greater good, humility, and patriotism. Each of us owes them a debt of gratitude and our deepest respect. Designating this portion of the highway shows them how much we appreciate all that they have given for our great state and the nation.”
According to statistics gathered by the U.S. Census Bureau, Livingston County is home to approximately 5,000 American veterans.
“Many of our community’s service members have paid the ultimate price for their country and our safety. We want to take time to remember those veterans who are no longer with us because it was their actions that keep us safe now,” Senator Young added.
Mary Tichenor, President of the Legion Auxiliary Unit #664, said, “The Committee for Veterans Memorial Highway 15A is deeply grateful to Senator Young for her leadership of this worthy designation in honor of our veterans. We also appreciate the support of municipal leaders and the many veterans and patriotic organizations who endorsed this project.”
“Too often service members who come home bear the physical and emotional scars from their service. They have given their energy and their lives, so that we may live free. We cannot allow ourselves to let that sacrifice fade from our memories. The Springwater Veterans Memorial Highway and Livonia Veterans Memorial Highway will provide residents and visitors a daily reminder, and serves as another way that we, as citizens of this great state, can say ‘thank you’ to our veterans,” Senator Young said.
