Squadron: FDNY Represents The Best Of New York
ALBANY – State Senator Daniel Squadron honored the New York City Fire Department today with a Senate resolution celebrating its 150th Anniversary. Senator Squadron’s resolution unanimously passed the New York State Senate.
FDNY was founded in 1865, and over the course of 150 years, has fostered a tradition of bravery, service, and community engagement. In times of great adversity and tragedy in New York's history -- from the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory Fire of 1911 through September 11, 2001 and beyond -- the devoted firefighters of the FDNY have responded with courage.
"For 150 years, the men and women of FDNY have been on call, ready to protect us when we most need it," said State Senator Daniel Squadron. "Being part of FDNY requires bravery and humanity every day -- for which we all say thank you. Whether fighting fires, providing medical assistance, or working side by side with the community for public safety, the FDNY represents the best of New York. I'm happy to join FDNY in celebrating their 150th anniversary."
“Thank you to State Senator Squadron and all the members of the State Senate for recognizing the brave service of FDNY members over the last 150 years,” said Fire Commissioner Daniel A. Nigro. “In this historic year for the Department, the men and women of the FDNY are proud to celebrate with New Yorkers in every community in our city.”
As cited in Squadron's resolution, the FDNY today is the largest municipal fire department in the United States and the second largest in the world. It employs approximately 10,200 uniformed firefighters and over 3,600 uniformed EMTs and paramedics who bravely serve more than eight million New York City residents. FDNY will be hosting a series of community events throughout the year to celebrate this important milestone in its history.
