Senator Amedore: Time to Make Tax Cap Permanent

The New York State Senate today passed a bill (S.5597), co-sponsored by Senator George Amedore, that would make the two percent tax cap enacted in 2011 permanent. The tax cap is currently set to expire in June of 2016.

“By establishing a permanent tax cap, we will ensure that families and businesses are not taxed out of the State. The tax cap has been a proven tool to hold the line on property taxes that had skyrocketed out of control for too many years prior to its enactment,” said Senator Amedore.

According to a study released by the Empire Center, it is estimated that the property tax cap has saved taxpayers $7.6 billion over the past three years. However, Senator Amedore noted that there is still work to be done.

“In addition to making the property tax cap permanent, we must continue to find ways to reduce the tax burden placed on our citizens,” said Senator Amedore. “We need to eliminate unfunded mandates and continue to work closely with local officials to implement innovative cost saving measures. By taking these steps, we will be able to offer true relief and lower the property tax burden for all hardworking New Yorkers.”

The bill was sent to the Assembly for action.
