Senator George Amedore Introduces Legislation to Establish Term Limits for State Legislators

Senator George Amedore has introduced legislation (S.3808) that would impose term limits for members of the New York State Senate and Assembly. Under the bill, members of the Legislature would be ineligible to serve more than six two-year terms in either the Assembly or Senate. The legislation would go into effect in January 2017.

“Holding office is a civic duty, and a way of giving back to the community in the form of public service,” said Senator Amedore. “New voices and ideas will help to keep our government innovative and responsive to the people, while bringing fresh perspective to the issues that plague our state, including the high cost of living and the need for good-paying jobs to revitalize our economy.”

Under current Senate rules, committee chairs and leadership positions are term limited to eight years. The Senate has passed legislation (S.2722) in previous years, which Senator Amedore has co-sponsored this year, which would enact those term limits in statute.

Senator Amedore has also co-sponsored a constitutional amendment (S.57) that would increase the term of office for the Legislature from two years to four years, and would limit members of the Legislature to serving three terms.
