Legislation Inspired by Local Bronx After-School Program Passes in the State Senate
Bronx, NY - State Senator Gustavo Rivera (D-Bronx), the ranking member of the State Senate Health Committee, announced the passage of bill S.993A in the State Senate. The legislation, which was introduced at the urging of an after-school program located in Senator Rivera's district, would ban smoking tobacco products in and around after-school programs.
"Although we have long known the health risk second-hand smoking can cause in children, many smokers still decided to light up in areas that are supposed to be a healthy environments for our youth" said State Senator Gustavo Rivera. "I am very proud that we have passed this bill in the State Senate in an effort to combat health issues that arise from second-hand smoke exposure throughout our state. I remain committed to working with Assemblyman Pichardo to bring this bill to a vote in the Assembly to ensure we continue to safeguard our public health and the health of future generations."
This legislation is pending in the New York State Assembly as A5917A and is sponsored by Assemblyman Victor Pichardo (D-Bronx).
