Volunteer firefighters put their lives on the line every day to make our communities safe. Their dedication cannot be overestimated. However, the number of volunteers has declined drastically over the past decade. As part of an initiative called Recruit NY, volunteer fire departments from across the state will open their doors this Saturday, April 25th, (and, in some cases, Sunday, April 26th, as well) as they look for new volunteer members.
These open houses will provide information about free training programs, responsibilities and what a typical day-in-the-life of a volunteer firefighter involves. If you have ever considered volunteering for your local fire department, or if you know someone who might be interested, this weekend is a great time to visit and learn more. To find a volunteer fire department in your area that is participating in the Open House weekend, visit http://www.recruitny.org/participation-area/
I also have a brochure that outlines the benefits and incentives for volunteer emergency personnel in New York State. You may email me at Farley@nysenate.gov or call my office at 455-2181 (Albany), 885-1829 (Ballston Spa), 762-3733 (Johnstown) or toll-free (800) 224-5201 to obtain a copy.
