Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) announced that the New York State Senate has passed his “American Made Flag Act” legislation. The legislation would require all American flags used by the State and local governments to be 100 percent made in America.

“The American flag is one of our most sacred symbols; people have died protecting it and everything it stands for. We should not be buying that symbol from another country with our taxpayer dollars. This legislation would ensure that state and local tax dollars are used to support American workers and businesses when they use American flags,” said Senator Martins.

Senator Martins’ legislation (S288) would require all U.S. flags purchased by New York State and local governments and flown at state and local government buildings to be 100 percent American made.

The states of Massachusetts, Tennessee, Oklahoma, and Minnesota have all adopted laws requiring the use of domestically made flags. The Florida State Legislature recently approved similar legislation which has been sent to the Governor for consideration.

The legislation has been sent to the Assembly.
