$250,000 in State Funding Will Allow Nassau County To Further Enhance Stannards Brook Park
Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) announced that he has secured state funding for Nassau County to continue renovating Stannards Brook Park in Port Washington.
“Stannards Brook Park is a jewel of the Port Washington community. It’s been transformed from a run-down eyesore to a place where people of all ages go to relax, take a walk, learn about nature, or just enjoy the outdoors. Using this new funding, Nassau County can further enhance the park for the benefit of all residents,” said Senator Martins.
Located at the corner of Carlton Avenue and Charles Street, Stannards Brook Park is a wooded and narrow three acre neighborhood park bisected by a winding brook. In 2012, the park was completely rehabilitated and renovated to include a paved walking trail, benches, trellises, and three bridges spanning the stream. Invasive and non-indigenous plants were also removed and replaced with indigenous species.
The state funding secured by Senator Martins will allow the County to undertake the second phase of renovations at the park. The park will be expanded by an additional two acres, with new landscaping, flowers, and foliage. Additionally, a new boardwalk will be constructed running east-west across the park to a new entrance on Monroe Street. The funding will also enable for the preservation of wetland areas.
“Stannards Brook Park is a fabulous amenity for the Port Washington community; it provides recreation, education, and relaxation. Right in the middle of a modern, busy Long Island town, residents have their own little sanctuary where they can go to enjoy the beauty of nature. Thanks to our great Senator, Senator Martins, we will now be able to continue the next phase of renovations and complete the park as we envisioned it,” said Myron Blumenfeld, Founder of the Port Washington Parks Conservancy, a non-profit organization whose mission is to restore, enhance, and preserve the parks in Port Washington.
“Stannards Brook County Park is one of the most beautiful parks you will find in the region,” said Nassau County Executive Edward P. Mangano. “Working with the community and other municipalities, we have preserved and improved a true Nassau County treasure. I thank Senator Martins for securing the necessary funds to expand the park with acreage, landscaping and a boardwalk."
“The park is a hidden gem. Many thanks to Senator Martins for securing the funding and to the County for making sure the park continues to be enjoyed by the residents of Port Washington for many years to come,” said Town of North Hempstead Councilwoman Dina De Giorgio.
