Students in Mrs. Drucker’s fifth grade class at Manorhaven Elementary School in Port Washington recently welcomed Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate) to their classroom. Senator Martins served as a guest reader to the students as part of Manorhaven’s annual Community Read Aloud.
Senator Martins read For the Right to Learn by Rebecca Longston-George to the class. The book tells the story of Malala Yousafzai, a young girl in Pakistan who was nearly killed for courageously defying the Taliban’s rules prohibiting girls from going to school, and how one person can truly change the world. For her courage and efforts, she was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2014 at age 17, the youngest ever Nobel laureate.
