     Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) announced that he secured state funding for community parent education programs at the Manhasset Public Library.

     The $5,000 in state funding will help Manhasset Community Coalition Against Substance Abuse (CASA), in partnership with the Manhasset Public Library, present its “Power of Parenting” series. The workshops, which will take place at the Manhasset Public Library, provide parents and caregivers with the skills, insight and knowledge they need to raise healthy youth in today’s world.

     The “Power of Parenting” series includes the following programs:

     • “The Fragile Teen Brain” discusses how alcohol, marijuana, and drugs affect the developing teen brain (Wednesday, February 25th, 7:30 p.m.);

     • “What Adults Need to Know About Bullying” addresses bullying prevention and how adults can help the bullied, the bullies, and the bystanders (Wednesday, March 11th, 1 pm and 7 pm);

     • “Raising Confident & Healthy Girls” looks at how adults can balance pop culture images and messages to help girls grow into healthy and confident young women (Wednesday, April 29th, 1 pm and 7 pm)

     “Children face many challenges as they grow up; peer pressure to use alcohol or drugs, being bullied, and maintaining a positive self-image. Parents themselves faced these same challenges when they were growing up, but are unsure about how to help their own children through them. Manhasset CASA’s workshops, in partnership with the Manhasset Public Library, teach parents different skills and strategies to protect their kids and keep them safe. These are valuable services and I’m pleased to support them,” said Senator Martins.

     “Manhasset CASA is thankful to have champions in our community like Senator Martins and the Manhasset Public Library who support essential parent education programs that facilitate the healthy growth of youth,” stated Caryn Sawyer, Executive Director, Manhasset CASA.

     “Our Library takes pride in the services that we offer our community and none is more essential than the educational support and guidance provided to parents and their children through the Power of Parenting series. We are very grateful to Senator Martins for his support and to CASA for partnering with us in this long term commitment to the Manhasset community,” said Maggie Gough, Library Director, Manhasset Public Library.
