Senator Jack M. Martins (R-7th Senate District) announced that he secured state funding for the Floral Park Police Department to enhance safety on Village roadways.
The Department will use the $10,000 in state funding to support its traffic enforcement program. The Department will be purchasing new equipment, including a license plate reader unit and LIDAR speed gun, that will be used to prevent crime, track down stolen vehicles, remove unlicensed drivers from the road, and control speeding.
“This new technology is all about improving safety in the Village. Using this new equipment will help the Floral Park Police Department make the roads safer for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians,” said Senator Martins.
According to Floral Park Police Department Commissioner Stephen G. McAllister, the Department conducted a thorough analysis of traffic accidents over a 5 year period as part of its Strategic Management Plan. This analysis has demonstrated that through the 3 E's (Education, Engineering and Enforcement), the Department can make a difference with respect to traffic safety.
“The Department’s Traffic Safety Initiative utilizing an Intelligence Led Policing model intends to focus enforcement at locations that have been proven to be problematic in the past. Our focus will be on correcting bad driving behaviors which include speeding, texting / cell phone usage, seatbelts, DWI, and Red Lights / Stop Signs,” said Commissioner McAllister. “With the help of Senator Martins in securing much needed funding for this initiative, it is our intention to utilize emerging technologies to assist in our efforts of protecting our Village and improving the quality of life for all that traverse through our community.”
