HERKIMER, 09/16/15 – State Senator James L. Seward (R/C/I-Oneonta) today announced a $50,000 grant to assist the Herkimer Central School District with budgetary needs.
“Our schools are faced with growing financial demands while, at the same time, student needs are also on the rise,” said Senator Seward. “I am pleased to partner with the Herkimer Central School District in making certain that our students have the tools they need to succeed in the classroom and thrive as they progress through life.”
The legislative grant secured by Senator Seward is being used to enhance Herkimer’s student programs by restoring an elementary school teaching position.
“I have worked to simplify the formula used in Albany when determining education aid to our schools. While some positive changes have been enacted, there are still instances that simply cannot be accounted for on a spreadsheet. That’s why I maintain personal contact with schools throughout my district to understand their individual needs and provide additional assistance where it is needed,” added Seward.
Herkimer Central School District Superintendent Robert Miller said, “Senator Seward recognizes the challenges we face as a small school district and his advocacy and partnership mean a great deal. This grant strengthens our ability to help our most needy students and will increase academic intervention services to our children.”
“Ensuring our local schools receive their fair share of state aid is a leading priority of mine. The aid dollars translate to opportunities for our students, and tax relief for local property owners. Where more funding is needed, I have pressed for grants like this to level the playing field,” Seward concluded.
