BRONX, NY - State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester), together with Congressman Joseph Crowley (D-Bronx), Assemblyman Michael Benedetto (D-Bronx), Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr., Councilman James Vacca (D-Bronx), community and civic leaders, and thousands of Bronxites, marched in the 17th annual Throggs Neck St. Patrick’s Day Parade in the Bronx this past Sunday.
“St. Patrick’s Day is a day to celebrate the great history, culture and fighting spirit of the Irish. For nearly a decade, I have been marching in the Throggs Neck St. Patrick’s Day parade and attending the community’s annual breakfast,” said Senator Klein. “I applaud the efforts of the Throggs Neck Benevolent Association for putting together this tremendous event and I extend my heartfelt congratulations to this year’s grand marshals Agnes and Patrick Lynch. I wish everyone a safe, happy, fun-filled St. Patrick’s Day!”
“Senator Klein has marched with us since the beginning, and I can only begin to express how much we have appreciated his partnership over these last 17 years,” said Karin O’Connor, Secretary of the Throggs Neck Benevolent Association. “The Throggs Neck St. Patrick’s Day Parade is a beloved Bronx tradition and I thank the community for the support and kindness they have shown us. Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all Bronxites!”
The parade began with mass at St. Benedict’s Church and was followed by the community’s annual St. Patrick’s Day breakfast. Participants then proceeded to the parade route at noon, kicking off at the corner of East Tremont and Lafayette Avenues, then trailing onto Harding Avenue and finally concluding at Harding and Brinsmade Avenues.
During the parade, Senator Klein and his staff handed out shamrock sugar cookies to hundreds of hungry marchers and parade goers. More than 21 bands and 60 different groups marched throughout the day. All participants wore green in honor of St. Patrick’s Day, including shamrock shades, top hats and a variety of green buttons and pins.
