ALBANY, NY - State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) met with nearly 50 Bronx students from J.H.S. 127 Castle Hill Middle School at the State Capitol on Monday. The school’s visit coincided with the third annual Bronx Day celebration in Albany – a commemorative event highlighting the borough’s unique culture, thriving businesses, successful students and first-rate schools.
Senator Jeff Klein said, “By investing in our students, we are investing in our future and lifting up New Yorkers for generations to come. Students and children represent the best and brightest of our borough and I’m proud to welcome Castle Hill Middle School to Albany to celebrate Bronx Day. I look forward to continuing to work with my colleagues in government, community groups, teachers and parents as we fight to improve our schools and provide a sound education to all students across this great state.”
Students at Castle Hill Middle School currently take part in the Youth Participatory Action Research Program – a Common-Core aligned initiative focused on building research and advocacy skills through problem identification, data collection and analysis. Students met with Senator Klein to discuss the scope of their work, including recent projects centered on cyberbullying, student-technology engagement, school lunch and more.
Harry Sherman, Principal of Castle Hill Middle School said, “We are very proud of the work our students have done this year confronting challenges in their community. With the guidance of dedicated staff they have learned the power of knowledge and agency as they have researched the issues and advocated for change. These experiences will shape the belief they have that the world and its problems are not static, but subject to progress and change, and most importantly that they can affect that change.”
