Klein celebrates life and work of retiring Pelham Bay police officer at Bronx Day in Albany
ALBANY, NY - State Senator Jeff Klein (D-Bronx/Westchester) honored Victor DiPierro for his distinguished 20-year career with the New York City Police Department (NYPD) at the third annual Bronx Day celebration in Albany on Monday. A Pelham Bay native, Mr. DiPierro joined the NYPD in 1995, first serving as a patrolman and then working his way up to detective specialist at the 49th precinct.
Senator Jeff Klein said, “Detective Vic DiPierro has served as one of New York’s Finest for two decades — going above and beyond the call of duty to protect the residents of the Morris Park community and all children and families across New York. Vic is a shining example of the value and importance of community-policing in our neighborhoods and I know that his departure will be felt well beyond the 49th precinct. I’m proud to honor Vic DiPierro for his steadfast service and dedication to the NYPD and I’m glad to call him my friend. I look forward to seeing what the future holds for Vic and wish him well in all his endeavors.”
Mr. DiPierro attended Blessed Sacrament High School in New Rochelle and earned his associate degree from the College of Westchester. He joined the NYPD in 1995 and was assigned to the 49th precinct the following year. Shortly after, Mr. DiPierro joined the Community Police On Patrol (CPOP) initiative, where he spent five years covering the Morris Park community from Indian Village to Bronxdale Avenue.
Victor DiPierro said, “I’m incredibly honored to be recognized by Sen. Jeff Klein. When I was just starting out, Jeff was a district leader in the community and it’s been a pleasure to watch us both grow and advance in our careers over the last few years. Jeff is not only an outstanding public servant and leader, but a close friend. Thank you Jeff for all you do in The Bronx and thank you for this tremendous award.”
In the aftermath of 9/11, Mr. DiPierro was assigned to work at Ground Zero for several months. Three years later, as a result of his work at the site, he was diagnosed with Thyroid Cancer. In 2003, Mr. DiPierro was assigned the position of Community Affairs Officer at the 49th precinct. In 2013, he was promoted to detective specialist.
Jay Sturdivant, Community Affairs Officer at the 49th Precinct said, “Congratulations to Vic on this great honor. This is bittersweet for me because I have learned so much from him working together over the years. Vic has come to serve as the big brother I never had and I know I am one of many when I say his presence will be sorely missed both at the precinct and throughout The Bronx. I wish him all the best in the future.”
Captain Timothy McCormack of the 49th Precinct said, “It’s been an honor to watch Vic over the years. He’s been an inspiration to other officers and the surrounding community. Vic has brought an unparalleled level of expertise to the job and I’m sad to lose him. Good luck to Vic in the future, I wish him and his family all the best.”
Mr. DiPierro lives in Country Club with his wife, Lucy, and son, Victor Anthony. He will officially retire on June 30th, 2015 after 20 years of dedicated service.
