Community Dialogue includes presentation from NYCHA and Q&A Session from Residents
(Brooklyn, NY) Last night, more than 80 residents gathered at the Van Dyke Community Center at the New York City Housing Authority (NYCHA) Town Hall convened by Senator Jesse Hamilton and co-hosted by Assemblywoman Latrice Walker, Councilwoman Darlene Mealy, and District Leader Anthony Jones. The Town Hall included panelists from the De Blasio administration, Harold Miller, from the NYC Mayor's Office of Community Affairs, and NYCHA, Brian Honan from the NYCHA State and City Legislative Affairs office. Dedrea Olivera, Editor in Chief of the Brownsville Collective Newspaper, served as the moderator.
The NYCHA Town Hall provided an opportunity for residents to learn about current developments, pose questions as to the future plans for NYCHA, and to provide input as to what they envisioned for the future of the community. Brian Honan delivered a PowerPoint presentation on Next Generation NYCHA and its meaning for the community. An introduction to NYCHA housing was given, how it operates, how it is funded and future plans for NYCHA were also explained. Representatives from the NYC Public Advocate’s office, the Brooklyn Borough President’s office, other elected officials, and neighborhood and community groups were also in attendance.
In addition to NYCHA, Senator Hamilton and Assemblywoman Walker delivered updates about developments in Albany during the legislative session. Highlights included $700 million for Central Brooklyn health care and the $100 million budgeted for NYCHA channeled through the Dormitory Authority of the State of New York. Senator Hamilton’s office also provided constituent services at the event, taking concerns, questions, and complaints so they could be addressed by NYCHA or the relevant city or state authorities.
Senator Hamilton indicated that the event continued in the ongoing series of community dialogues he has been hosting in cooperation with other elected officials and community groups during the course of the year, including forums on housing, education, criminal justice system reform, health, and other community concerns in the neighborhoods of Sunset Park, Park Slope, Prospect Heights, Crown Heights, Prospect-Lefferts Gardens, East Flatbush, and Brownsville.
