Senator Jesse Hamilton Helps Host Interfaith Community Gathering in Recognition of Ramadan, Awards Citation to Imam Kazeem Atanda

(Brooklyn, NY - July 7, 2015) Last night, Senator Jesse Hamilton helped to host a community gathering in Crown Heights to share in the holiday of Ramadan in partnership with colleagues and the Nigerian American Muslim Integrated Community. Over one hundred members of the community gathered, including people of all faiths, sharing in together to celebrate the breaking of the Ramadan fast (Iftar).

Senator Hamilton recognized Imam Kazeem Atanda with a Citation, highlighting Imam Atanda’s work in the community and his efforts to build bridges and understanding.

A variety of Halal Nigerian and Caribbean dishes were served to guests and Senator Hamilton’s office distributed information about resources and upcoming community events.

Speakers included, Senator Jesse Hamilton, NYC Council Member Laurie Cumbo, 57th Assembly District Leader Olanike Alabi, and Director of Community Affairs in Senator Hamilton's 20th Senate District Office Raul Rothblatt, a Community Affairs representative from the 77th Precinct, Dahlia Goldenberg from Kolot Chayeinu Synagogue in Park Slope, and the leadership of the Nigerian American Muslim Integrated Community.

The evening's contributors delivered important messages on community togetherness. “Islam is about love, peace, and living with your neighbor. Anything else is un-Islamic,” the President of the Nigerian American Muslim Integrated Community remarked – adding that he looked forward to welcoming even more members of the community next year.
