Senate Passes Bill to Create a Registry of Violent Offenders

(Albany, NY)- Senator John J. Bonacic (R/C/I-Mt. Hope) is pleased to announce that The Domestic Violence Protection Act, also known as “Brittany’s Law”, has passed the Senate. The bill, S513, would increase the safety and awareness of communities by increasing access to information about convicted violent felons. It would create a publicly accessible registry of all individuals convicted of a violent felony and allow local law enforcement to keep track of their location.

 “As legislators, we have a duty to keep our communities safe,” said Bonacic. “I am proud to join with my colleagues in the Senate in supporting this legislation that takes a tremendous step forward in adopting a tougher stance against violent crime.”

 The bill is named in memory of Brittany Passalacqua, who was murdered along with her mother at their home in Geneva, NY, in November of 2009.  The perpetrator was a convicted felon who been released from prison early, and had been put on parole just months before he committed the crime.

 The bill has been sent to the Assembly.
