Senator Bonacic Joins Effort To Keep Our Children Safe From Sex Offenders
(Albany, NY)-New York State Senator John J. Bonacic (R/C/I – Mt. Hope), joined his Republican Senate colleagues in announcing the findings of a joint-investigative report, “Keeping Our Children Safe From Sex Offenders.” The report, which can viewed here, uncovered startling violations of residency restrictions and a major loophole in the law.
“The findings of the investigative report are disturbing,” said Bonacic. “Ensuring the safety and security of children is a top priority of mine. I currently sponsor S.1608, which would require sex offenders to report secondary residences to the police within ten days. This legislation has twice passed the New York State Senate, but has not been acted upon by the Assembly. Previously I have carried legislation which has been signed into law to prevent individuals convicted of sexual offenses from being school bus drivers (Ch. 400 of 2011) and volunteer firefighters (Ch. 198 of 2014). I will continue to work with my colleagues in the Senate to ensure that important pieces of legislation protecting children from sex offenders become law.”
As a result of the investigative report, the New York State Senate will immediately act on key sex offender legislation—including closing the major loophole in the law and allowing localities to strengthen residency restrictions.
