NYSDOT Announces $16.6 Million Route 112 Reconstruction Project

New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Matthew Driscoll today announced that work is underway on a $16.6 million project to reconstruct State Route 112 in the Town of Brookhaven in Suffolk County. The project will improve safety and ease congestion along this busy stretch of road. 

“Under Governor Andrew Cuomo’s leadership, New York is rebuilding our aging infrastructure with stronger and smarter projects that create jobs and improve our facilities for all users, now and into the future,” Commissioner Driscoll said.  “Enhancing traffic safety and pedestrian, bicycling and transit facilities will improve the quality of life for the entire community.” 

Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan said, “I am pleased that the state will invest these resources to rehabilitate Route 112 in Brookhaven. This important project will ease congestion and improve the quality of life in Suffolk County, and continue our overall efforts to rebuild our infrastructure, create new jobs and grow our economy.” 

The project will reconstruct 1.7 miles of State Route 112 between Granny Road and State Route 25 in the hamlet of Coram. It will improve safety for motorists, bicyclists and pedestrians and reduce travel delays for the approximately 24,000 drivers who use this section of State Route 112 each day. 

Utility relocation work started earlier this month and site clearing and grubbing is underway.  

Features of the Route 112 safety and mobility improvement project include:

• Wider pavement with one lane in each direction and left or two-way center turn lanes;
• New bike lanes between Granny and Skips roads;
• New and/or improved continuous sidewalks with curb ramps;
• New traffic and pedestrian signals;
• High visibility pedestrian crosswalks, countdown timers and refuge areas;
• New drainage systems to aid roadway storm water run-off; and
• Landscaped raised medians, landscaping and tree plantings. 

Congressman Lee M. Zeldin (NY-1), Member of the House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee, said, "Route 112 in Brookhaven is a vital North-South roadway that connects businesses and residents throughout one of the largest towns in America. This project will not only improve the quality of life in Suffolk County, but it will also provide our community with jobs and help grow our economy. I thank Governor Cuomo, Commissioner Driscoll, and our state elected officials for their effort to make this project a reality." 

Assemblyman Dean Murray said, “The NY State DOT has done a great job with the northern portion of Route 112 and I look forward to seeing the much-needed work to be done in the central and southern portion as well.  I'm particularly excited to see this project get underway as this will continue to address some of the traffic and pedestrian concerns in the Coram area." 

Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone said, “It is vital that we continue to invest in our infrastructure here in Suffolk County as these improvements will assist our residents and visitors who utilize this road every day.  These improvements will compliment Wincoram Commons and enhance revitalization efforts in Coram.  I want to thank Governor Cuomo for his continued commitment to investing in infrastructure and to the residents of Suffolk County.”

To minimize the impact of construction, access to businesses will be maintained throughout construction; pedestrian traffic will be maintained at all times; and most construction activities that require travel lane closures will be conducted during night time hours. 

The construction contractor for the project is A.L.A.C Construction of West Babylon, New York. Work is scheduled to be completed in 2017. 

Motorists are reminded that fines are doubled for speeding in a work zone. In accordance with the Work Zone Safety Act of 2005, convictions of two or more speeding violations in a work zone could result in the suspension of an individual’s driver’s license.
