Senator Flanagan Sponsors Free Mammogram Event In Centereach
October 19, 2015
Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) is joining with Project Renewal ScanVan to host a free breast cancer screening event at the Middle Country Public Library in Centereach on Wednesday, November 4th. The event will begin at 9:30 am at the library, which is located at 101 Eastwood Boulevard in Centereach.
ScanVan is the country's first mobile mammography and radiology clinic for those in need of mammograms. It is funded by the Cancer Services Program of Suffolk in conjunction with the Greater NYC Affiliate of Susan G. Komen for the Cure and the Avon Foundation.
According to ScanVan’s website, 4 out of 10 women who do not have insurance did not get a mammogram last year.
This event is for women 40 and older who have not had a mammogram in the past year. The van accepts all insurance plans for those who are insured, and co-payments and deductibles are waived. It is free for those who are uninsured.
An appointment is necessary so all who are interested should call 1-800-564-6868 to schedule an appointment.
Senator Flanagan’s involvement with Project Renewal continues his efforts to help all women in New York State be better informed about their health. This builds on the Breast Density Information law, sponsored by Senator Flanagan in 2012, which he sponsored, which requires providers of mammography services to notify patients when they have dense breast tissue and to inform patients about the importance of discussing additional screening options with their doctor.
“Regular exams are the key to early detection and early detection is essential to fighting breast cancer. That is why we passed the Breast Density Information Law and why we are joining with Project Renewal for this event. I am hopeful that anyone who has not yet had their annual mammogram will join us so they can be as informed as possible. Thank you to the staff and leadership of both Project Renewal and the Middle Country Public Library for their assistance with this important event,” stated Senator Flanagan.
