Statement from Senator Majority Leader John Flanagan
John J. Flanagan
June 18, 2015
As I said earlier, we fully expect to complete the bulk of our legislative business this evening and are making preparations to conclude the session.
The State Senate has already acted on legislation to extend New York City’s current rent laws for eight years with provisions to enforce the intent of the laws that ensure help to those who truly need it. Unfortunately, the Assembly has failed to pass this bill.
Let’s be clear - We continue to believe very strongly that our bill is the best approach to the City’s affordable housing challenges. However, in order to give all of the parties additional time to resolve their differences, we will join the Assembly tonight in approving a one-time extender through Tuesday. This short extender is intended to pave the way to a permanent solution.
We look forward to continuing our earnest negotiations over the weekend so we can fix New York City’s broken rent laws and come to a final resolution on a number of other outstanding issues by Tuesday.
