(Albany, NY)- Senator Serrano participated in two major rallies for stronger rent laws. On June 3rd, the Senator was joined by New York City Council Members who came to lend their voice to the urgent need to protect affordable housing for hard working New Yorkers. On June 9th, thousands of tenants came to the State Capitol to demand and end to vacancy decontrol and other rent loopholes that are destroying affordable housing all across New York City.
"The only way to protect and preserve affordable housing for New Yorkers is by strengthening rent regulations," said Senator Serrano. "We must do more to ensure that low and middle income New Yorkers do not get priced out of their homes. It is unfortunate that not everyone in Albany understands the importance of affordable housing, and instead of building on existing laws and creating much-needed, stronger pro-tenant legislation, we were only able to secure an extension of the existing laws. While the end result wasn't as monumental as we had hoped, an extension of the rent regulation laws will allow thousands of New Yorkers to remain in their homes. I will continue to fight until we reach real rent regulation reform."
