(South Bronx, NY)- Senator Serrano submitted a written testimony to the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) urging them to hold a public hearing before it rules on the Harlem River Yard Power Plant's permit renewal. Senator Serrano has long been in opposition to these power plants.
"The South Bronx suffers from some of the worst health disparities of any community in New York State. While there are many factors contributing to these alarming statistics - such as access to healthy foods and quality healthcare - one major factor has been the concentration of polluting facilities throughout the South Bronx. Toward this end, I am strongly advocating for a public hearing regarding the renewal of the temporary Harlem River Yards Power Plant's operating permit. The residents of this community, long burdened by adisproportionately large number of polluting facilities, should be afforded the opportunity to have their concerns heard in a public and open process."
