Recycling Event Hosted by Addabbo and Assemblyman Mike Miller Hauls in 30,000 Pounds of Paper and Electronics & Also Fills Up Two Salvation Army Trucks WITH a Variety of Reusable Household Items

Queens, NY (June 8, 2015): NYS Senator Joseph P. Addabbo, Jr. and Assemblymember Mike Miller are pleased to announce that their most recent community recycling event, which was held on April 26th, hauled in more than 30,000 pounds of paper and electronic e-waste from local residents while filling up two entire Salvation Army trucks with a variety of reusable household items. At that Spring recycling event, 24,673 pounds of electronic waste were collected and roughly 7,300 pounds of paper was shredded.

Addabbo and Miller have been collaborating on these twice-a-year community recycling events since 2010, enabling their constituents to dispose of unwanted clothing, electronics, glassware, books, eyeglasses and a variety of other household goods in an environmentally responsible manner.  In addition, recycling event participants are provided with the opportunity to have confidential documents and other paperwork securely shredded while they watch.  The April 26 recycling day was also sponsored by TD Bank. 

“Since Mike and I began organizing these free recycling events five years ago, we have helped our constituents remove a grand total of 262,500 pounds of paper and electronics alone from our waste stream,” said Addabbo, a member of the Senate Environmental Conservation Committee. “That translates into more than 131 tons of waste that hasn’t been dumped in landfills, and still doesn’t include the many more tons of clothing, books, eyeglasses, curtains and other housewares that we have been able to recycle or donate to the Salvation Army and other charitable organizations.” 

“These highly successful events are a direct reflection of how much our constituents care about protecting and preserving our environment, and how much they appreciate the opportunity to dispose of items safely and securely in a ‘green’ way,” said Miller.  “Plus, many of the donated items will go to help out neighbors in need in our area.  It’s a real win-win situation for our community and our entire planet.”

Addabbo and Miller, in addition to thanking their constituents for their enthusiastic participation, also expressed their gratitude to TD Bank, Data-Struction, E-Green Management/PK Metals, and the Salvation Army for their assistance with the recycling event.  The volunteer efforts of local boy scouts and the Maspeth High School Green Club were also noted by the legislators. 

“I hope our April recycling event helped local residents with at least some of their spring cleaning,” said Addabbo.  “But don’t forget: Mike and I will be sponsoring another free recycling day event in September to help residents clean out their homes while respecting our environment. We hope to see you there!”
