Brooklyn – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn), today is announcing that he has joined the nearly 500 people who have already signed a petition calling on the New York City Council to rename 90th Street and 3rd Avenue in honor of the late Patrice Capo.
Senator Golden, a longtime friend of Patrice and her surviving spouse Michael Diamond, was on record supporting the renaming request originally made to Community Board 10 in the Summer of 2011. The application, which was approved at that time, has since failed to be adopted by City Council to make the street renaming official.
Patrice Capo was the owner of Bay Ridge Bicycle World on 3rd Avenue for over 20 years and through her business, she encouraged health and fitness of her customers. In the wake of the attacks on the World Trade Center, Patrice stood as a constant volunteer at the office of then-Councilman Marty Golden and spent time as part of the bucket brigade at Ground Zero. Patrice also negotiated with her bike distributors to donate 500 bicycles to raffle off with the proceeds going to benefit the families of fallen firefighters.
Patrice, who passed away in 2009 after a battle with cancer, was also a leading supporter of a number of community organizations including the 3rd Avenue Merchants and the Ragamuffin Parade. Her husband continues to operate Bay Ridge Bicycle World and her son recently opened a gym, following in his mother’s footsteps of promoting healthy living.
Senator Marty Golden stated, “In her memory, I hope that the City Council will consider this street renaming which will inspire generations of folks to support their neighborhood and to give back. Our greatest asset here in Bay Ridge is the pride that we take in our community, and how we support each other. Patrice, in her life exemplified that, and her family, friends and neighbors look forward to the chance to rename a street in her memory.”
