NEW YORK – Today, Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R,C,I-Brooklyn, Staten Island) and Sen. Martin Golden (R,C,I-Brooklyn) commended the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives for passing, and President Barack Obama for signing, the Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu National Blue Alert Act of 2015 into law. The measure would create a nationwide alert system to assist in the apprehension of anyone who hurts, kills, or legitimately threatens police officers.
For the past five years, Malliotakis and Golden have introduced a similar piece of legislation in the New York State Legislature.
“This is great news for communities across the country and the brave men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect them,” said Assemblywoman Malliotakis. “Year after year, Senator Golden and I have called for passage of this legislation to increase the safety of New York State’s police force. I am so pleased to see this important measure finally adopted at the federal level. Following the tragic loss of NYPD Officers Rafael Ramos and Wenjian Liu, it is only right that we take all necessary steps to find and apprehend those who wound or murder our law enforcement officers.”
Senator Golden, a former New York City Police Officer stated, “There is no place on our streets for those who seriously injure or kill any local, state, or federal police officer. I have been working with my colleague Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis over the past couple of years to make a Blue Alert Law here in New York State. On behalf of all New York City and State Police Officers, as well as all those who wear the uniform throughout our Nation, we are humbled that system is now in place to more quickly arrest those criminals who target out police.”
