Brooklyn – State Senator Martin J. Golden (R-C-I, Brooklyn) today has issued the following statement announcing his support for the renewal of mayoral control of New York City public schools:
“In my days in the New York City Council, I worked with students, teachers and families under a system governed by the Board of Education. And now as a New York State Senator, I continue to address the needs of my schools and my students under a system of mayoral control. Confidently, I can tell you that the system has and continues to work better since mayoral control was enacted, and I am proud to support this renewal.
Undoubtedly, Mayoral control has proven to work better and has made our schools more efficient. Dropout rates have declined, graduation rates are on the rise, our schools are safer, and test scores have improved. The intent of changing to a system of Mayoral control was to improve our schools and the progress makes the case for renewal.
Working with former Mayor Bloomberg and now Mayor Bill de Blasio, Mayoral control has allowed me the necessary access to the Mayor and Chancellor on behalf of my schools and my students. We have made achievements under this system that include building school extensions, challenging wrongful attempts at co-location , and developing a Universal Pre-Kindergarten program that works for our families.
I look forward to working with our Mayor towards the ultimate goal of improving our schools and giving every child the opportunity they deserve.”
