Michael Gianaris

August 5, 2015

(Long Island City, NY) – Senator Michael Gianaris released the following statement on the announcement of Citi Bike coming to Long Island City. The arrival of the program in LIC will bring greater transportation alternatives, especially in an area with stressed mass transit and increasing amounts of commuters.

“I am proud to have gotten western Queens included in the Citi Bike expansion plans. The inclusion of Long Island City was a long time coming but I am glad it has finally arrived. Bike share will allow people to enjoy our neighborhood in a healthy, fun way and facilitate easier travel around western Queens, an area in dire need of better mass transit. I am thrilled to see western Queens given the opportunity to enjoy the benefits of Citi Bike and look forward to its further expansion into more of our neighborhoods.”

Senator Gianaris has been an active advocate for the inclusion of western Queens in the Citi Bike program since its debut in Brooklyn and Manhattan. Upon this debut, Senator Gianaris demanded the DOT complete plans for bike share in LIC and include Astoria and Sunnyside in future plans for the program. After working for years to bring Citi Bike to western Queens, Senator Gianaris is pleased the residents of our neighborhood will finally get to enjoy Citi Bike.
