Senator Gianaris Welcomes N and Q Subway Station Next Train Announcements
October 19, 2015
(Astoria, NY) – In light of the recent agreement between the city and state to fund the four-year MTA capital projects budget, Senator Michael Gianaris applauded the proposed deal which would include an upgrade of the train announcement system to the N and Q lines in Astoria. The project would represent the next step forward in improving the communication network at subway stations in western Queens, accompanying the real time countdown information and automated announcements Senator Gianaris first brought to N and Q subway stations in the fall of 2013.
“I am pleased the MTA will be making the daily commute of N and Q train riders easier,” said Senator Gianaris. “Upcoming train announcements were a great idea when first introduced, and although it has taken some time, I am pleased to see that all of western Queens will now be able to enjoy Real Time Information. There is a continuous need for service improvements and I hope this is a sign of things to come for Astoria and other rapidly developing western Queens neighborhoods.”
The upgraded system will include visual and audio announcements and will inform train riders on the relative position of an approaching train up to two stations away. The agreement also calls for the implementation of time-to-station countdown clocks by 2020. Senator Gianaris has been an active advocate for countdown clocks in western Queens stations and improvements to mass transit in the area.
