Senator Gallivan Applauds Federal Funding to Enhance Highway Safety

Senator Patrick M. Gallivan (R-C-I, Elma) says over $32 million in federal grants will be used to support traffic safety initiatives across New York State, including programs in Western New York.  The various programs are designed to reduce the number of deaths and injuries that occur on our highways and to improve overall traffic safety.  

“As a former State Trooper and Sheriff of Erie County, I support efforts to make our highways safer for everyone,” Gallivan said.  “These education and enforcement programs are a wise investment in making sure New York’s roads are as safe as possible.”  

Statewide, federal grants have been awarded to 541 programs administered by state, local and not-for-profit agencies to support three specific safety initiatives: 

     Police Traffic Service: This includes law enforcement efforts to target dangerous drivers and other enforcement initiatives aimed at preventing speeding, aggressive driving and DWI.

     Child Passenger Safety:  This includes child safety education, car seat checks and the distribution of safety seats.

     Highway Safety Grants:  This includes programs that cover additional traffic safety efforts that include education, training, crash reconstruction and railroad crossing safety.

Grant recipients in Erie County include:

• Depew Village Police:     $6,750 for Police Traffic Service
• Eden Town Police:     $4,480 for Police Traffic Service
• Erie County Office of Traffic Safety:     $4,000 for Child Passenger Safety
• Erie County Office of Traffic Safety:     $18,685 for Teen Driver Traffic Safety
• Erie County Sheriff’s Office:     $13,420 for Police Traffic Service
• Lancaster Town Police Department:     $7,020 for Police Traffic Service
• West Seneca Police Department:     $13,800 for Police Traffic Service

Grant recipients in Wyoming County include:

• Arcade Village Police:     $5,000 for Child Passenger Safety Program
• Arcade Village Police:     $2,500 for promoting helmet use
• Arcade Village Police:     $3,240 for Police Traffic Service
• Attica Village Police:     $3,000 for Child Passenger Safety Program
• Attica Village Police:     $2,340 for Police Traffic Service
• Perry Village Police:     $2,380 for Police Traffic Service
• Warsaw Village Police:     $3,960 for Police Traffic Service
• Wyoming County:     $7,000 for Child Passenger Safety Program

Grant recipients in Livingston County include:

• Avon Village Police:     $3,550 for Police Traffic Service
• Cornell Cooperative Extension of Livingston Co:     $17,500 for Child Passenger Safety Program
• Cornell Cooperative Extension of Livingston Co:     $49,176 for Traffic Safety Education
• Geneseo Village Police:     $3,300 for Child Passenger Safety Program
• Geneseo Village Police:     $11,960 for Police Traffic Service
• Livingston County Sheriff’s Office:     $8,000 for Child Passenger Safety Program

Grant recipients in Monroe County include:

• Monroe County Medical Examiners Forensic Toxicology Lab:    $60,000 for comprehensive toxicology testing in DUI and DUID
• Monroe County Sheriff’s Office:    $22,300 for Police Traffic Service
• Monroe County Traffic Safety:    $10,000 for Child Passenger Safety Program
• Monroe County Traffic Safety:    $96,000 for Community Traffic Safety

Federal funding is also provided to state agencies.  Under the program, the New York State Police will receive over $8-million for various traffic safety initiatives.  The New York State Division of Criminal Justice Services will receive over $3.6 million.
