The month of March marks National Women’s History Month, a time to reflect on the tremendous contributions of women from the past who have made indelible marks on today’s society. While it’s so important to celebrate the accomplishments of women from the past, a big part of National Women’s History Month is learning more about the women of today who are following in their footsteps and going above and beyond to make a difference.
From doctors and teachers to community volunteers and business leaders, over the past several years I’ve had the honor of recognizing dozens of women from across our region for their accomplishments through the New York State Senate’s “Women of Distinction” program. Established in 1998, this special initiative celebrates the unique contributions of women throughout New York State history by honoring those who are enriching the quality of life in our communities today.
This month, I’m calling on the people of our region to submit their nominations for the 2015 Women of Distinction program. Women living in the 48th Senate District, including Oswego, Jefferson and St. Lawrence Counties are eligible. Family, friends or coworkers are invited to make nominations by clicking here or by calling (315) 782-3418. The deadline for nominations is March 27th. All women nominated for this special honor will be invited to a local recognition ceremony taking place on April 30th.
Last year, I had the opportunity to recognize the accomplishments of 18 women who go above and beyond to make a difference in their communities. This year, I’m looking forward to honoring a new group of women who are working each and every day to make their mark in Central and Northern New York. If you know an amazing woman who should be honored through the “Women of Distinction” program, please don’t hesitate to nominate her.
